In 2018, as Youth Council Members of the Global Business Coalition for Education, we conducted a survey on Youth Skills and Innovation Initiative with Deloitte. The joint report published by Deloitte Global and the Global Business Coalition for Education is called Preparing tomorrow’s workforce for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The outcome shows that 75% of youth age 15-29 living in marginalized and peri-urban areas do not have adequate digital and soft skills. By 2025, nearly 40 million of youth in Sub-Saharan Africa won’t have these 21st century skills which are necessary for the future of work, with rapid changes in technology and automation during the fourth industrial revolution.

In the 2020 Resilience Report by GBC-Education, the Covid-19 pandemic has produced the most serious global crisis since World War II. By April 2020, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that the equivalent of 305 million full-time jobs had been lost. Nearly half of the global workforce — the 1.5 billion workers in the informal and gig economy — now find themselves in extreme precarity, having little access to basic social protection and safety nets.
